The UKs National Foresight Programme is a major initiative that sets out to identify opportunities to create sustained competitive advantage and to enhance the quality of life. Foresight is facilitated by the Office of Science and Technology, a part of the Department of Trade and Industry.
Since it began in 1993, the national Foresight Programme has drawn on the expertise of thousands of people from the Government, many of the countrys leading companies, universities and other institutions. By identifying technical opportunities and social drivers, Foresight has helped to shape research priorities, both in the public and private sectors.
Scenarios are central to Foresight. They provide structured views of how the future could look. Scenarios are the starting point for a wide-ranging discussion that leads managers to think about their businesses, the markets in which they operate, and to develop strategies for the future.
The reports of the national Foresight Programme present a series of panoramic scenarios for different sectors. Facilitators can use these scenarios as the starting point for discussions about the future in a Foresight workshop.
